BARRIER IN CHINESE STUDENTS’ LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Abstract:

This essay analyzes the relationship of college students’ proficiency in English phonetics and their ability in listening comprehension. The author conducted a survey study based on 110 college freshmen of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, finding that their lack of knowledge in English pronunciation, such as connected speech, sentence stress, intonation are the key barrier in their understanding of vocal materials in that language. Therefore, analyzing the features in English pronunciation should be emphasized in improving the students’ listening comprehension skill.
