TEACHING ETHICAL REASONING IN SECONDARY EDUCATION IN HONG KONG

SHUN-HING CHAN

Abstract:

This is a case study of enhancing ethical reasoning in teaching and learning and nurturing citizenship in Hong Kong’s secondary education. Students in Hong Kong generally find that ethics are difficult to learn due to the discrepancy between Western theories and the local context. I developed a new programme advocating a pedagogy of using local materials in teaching ethical reasoning, which was effective in facilitating teaching and learning ethical issues and helping students to be a responsible citizen. This programme was adopted by the Education Bureau in Hong Kong in September 2018 and was used by the Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority in its teachers’ training programme in November 2918. The beneficiaries are teachers and students in 90 secondary schools.
