PROMOTING INTERACTIVITY AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT THROUGH AN ONLINE STUDENT RESPONSE SYSTEM : YOTEACH!

DOROTHY CHOW

Abstract:

This paper introduces an innovative and interactive online Student Response System (SRS) – YoTeach! used in tertiary EAP classrooms in Hong Kong. Web-based SRSs have been viewed as potential tools to enhance the interaction and communication between instructors and students. Without the constraints in hardware installation, use of online clickers with mobile devices becomes popular in educational settings. YoTeach!, a web-based SRS developed by a university in Hong Kong, provides a platform for learners to ask or response to questions and get feedback using a collaborative instant messaging and drawing platform anonymously and instantaneously. Not only giving instant feedback in or after class, the system also allows teachers to engage classroom learning with active presentation by posting questions or images and annotating on top of them. Samples of activities implemented as well as student responses will be demonstrated in the presentation.
