DIFFERENTIATED TEACHING AND LEARNING

NIKI MELANIDOU

Abstract:

My research aimed at investigating whether the teaching of Greek as a Second/Foreign Language in Cyprus could become more effective through the implementation of Differentiated Teaching and Learning. There is an extensive presentation of the Bibliography on two axes: a) The Greek Language as Second / Foreign and b) Differentiated Teaching / Learning. Following this is the research into non-native speakers of the Greek language in public high school secondary education. Different teaching and learning was applied to the group of pupils, after the teacher's education was preceded. Afterwards, the effectiveness of teaching through the assessment of pupils' results and the process of action research as a tool for the development of teachers and teacher educators was evaluated. The research was based on the following questions: a) To what extent does the application of differentiated teaching / learning improve the lesson's results, b) Which methods and practices of differential teaching facilitate learning, c) How do students evaluate differentiated teaching, d) What are the results of implementing an Action Research on teacher training to diversify teaching and e) What are the results of the Action Research in Teacher Education and Teacher Training. In conclusion, the differentiated teaching and learning can be more effective if the curriculum of the Non Native Speakers is based on the actual needs of the students. A new curriculum must be designed, all the teachers must apply differentiation and a review on the whole program of these ‘special’ classes is needed in the Cypriot Education System.
