ENGLISH ACROSS THE CURRICULUM SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAL WRITING – A REMEDY FOR THE MISSING PART IN PREPARING FOR THE FINAL YEAR PROJECT

MARY MAN CHING CHENG

Abstract:

Can general academic English proficiency meet the rigorous academic writing demand throughout students’ undergraduate studies? Or, more to the point, what can be done to overcome the challenges that university students face in their disciplinary subject assignments? This presentation reports an on-going project on English Across the Curriculum which aims to discuss ways to encourage students and discipline teachers a stronger focus on appropriate language use in discipline subjects assessments. Given the fact that students might not have received any formal input on all types of assignment writing in their own field, the collaboration between the disciplinary teacher and the language teacher is important to enhance learning through awareness of language use. In this presentation, the practice and experience of collaboration between language teachers and discipline teachers will be shared. Challenges and limitation will also be discussed.
