Abstract:
Demographic processes are having an increasingly significant impact on socio-economic development, both in quantitative terms (e.g. through the declining proportion of the working-age population) and in qualitative terms (e.g. changes in the age structure of the population). Among the main consequences of contemporary demographic processes are an ageing population and depopulation. These pose a major challenge for policy-makers, who must adapt socio-economic development policies accordingly. Hence, the topic of the article is an overview of national demographic policies, their scope and the manner in which they achieve their objectives in the context of demographic change. The paper will facilitate discussion on current demographic policies and provide an international perspective on the issue. It should be emphasised that negative demographic trends do not affect Poland alone, but are, in fact, becoming a global problem. The paper emphasizes the fact that the exchange of experience and best practice in adapting development policies to demographic challenges is of huge importance.
