A CASE STUDY ON TURN TAKING SPOKEN DISCOURSE MARKER USAGE

Abstract:

This paper reports on a case study conducted between native and non-native speakers of English. The author recorded and transcribed the data between speakers over the course of an evening dinner. The data was then analyzed for marked discourse usage and interpreted for pragmatic meaning. Using a discourse analysis framework, the author attempts to draw conclusions on a few marked expressions observed in the transcriptions. Overall, a few pragmatic strategies were repeatedly observed in the data, which a few possibilities for their intended usage. Confusion between pragmatic meaning was noted between non-native and native speakers. Thus, pedagogical implications, especially those for non-native speakers of English attempting to master the English language, are also discussed with a few possibilities for enhancing language teacher awareness in the classroom.
