NATURE OF FORMULAIC LANGUAGE EXPRESSIONS

ABDULRAHMAN AMIN

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper study is to demonstrate synchronically the nature of formulaic language expressions to clarify their existence in language and linguistics, and to show how they play an important role in first and second language acquisition research. The issue of formulas has been analysed in recent years within the context of communicative competence. Observations of spontaneous speech indicate that the daily conversation of the native speaker includes many of these expressions, which are recalled or produced as wholes and make up a high proportion of fluent stretches of speech. Furthermore, several studies have shown that formulaic speech is common in first and second language acquisition (Peters, 1983 and Ellis, 1984b).

Keywords: Nature of formulaic language expressions are considered one of idiomatic expressions which have to be learnt as chunks.
